I have a problem. I’m a bit of an impulse buyer. I suffer from shiny object syndrome. As soon as I see or hear about something I like, I just want to get it there and then. And many times I do…only to learn that there was an even better model, price or an overall better purchase. If you don’t want to make the same mistake, have a look at our research of the DJI Mavic Pro vs Mavic Pro Platinum.
There are a few subtle differences between the two models that you should know about before you make your purchase. So here goes.
If you’re already a fan of DJI, you probably know that DJI have this habit of performing small incremental upgrades on their drone models. You’ve just gotten the latest and greatest, drone, let’s say the DJI Mavic Pro, only for it to be superseded a few months down the line.
But don’t feel too bad – it’s the same thing which happens with smartphones. Apple and Samsung keep releasing phones with better and better features. You can’t really keep up, can you? It’s the same with drones.
So let’s see the differences between the DJI Mavic Pro and the DJI Mavic Platinum Pro.
We’ve already fully reviewed the DJI Mavic Pro here, so this specific article will focus on the differences in the features between the Mavic Pro vs Mavic Pro Platinum.
Summary: DJI Mavic Pro vs Mavic Platinum Pro
- Flight time – the Platinum Pro flies for 30 minutes vs the 27 minutes of the Mavic
- Noise – the Platinum Pro uses 8331 propellers for an overall noise reduction of 4dB
- Price – the Platinum Pro is $100 more than the Mavic Pro ($999 vs $1099)
- Shell – the Platinum Pro has a platinum colored paint job
Essentially, when the Mavic came out at the end of 2016 approximately, there were two primary complaints – flight time and noise. By using new drivers and new propellers, the Mavic Platinum Pro has addressed both these issues simultaneously.
You can order the Platinum Pro now, with the estimated shipping time being the end of September.

The first improvement the Platinum Pro has vs the Mavic is flight time. By using new FOC sinusoidal driver ESCs (Electronic Speed Controllers) and newer 8331 propellers the Mavic Pro Platinum has gained an 11 percent improvement in flight time – i.e. it can now fly for up to 30 minutes. Those extra 3 minutes do make that subtle difference for professionals.
But even more than the extended flight-time, the real deal-breaker for pro videographers is the reduction in noise obtained by these two new improvements. The new propellers and ESCs have reduced the noise generated by the DJI Mavic Platinum Pro by 60% and increased stability.
This is very significant when you are shooting pro-video. The noise can typically become a distraction to the models, actors, musicians, wildlife or whatever else is being filmed at the time. The increased stability is also a plus, given the small size of the Mavic, it is somewhat prone to winds.
If you’re feeling like you missed out – fret not though, the new propellers are actually compatible with the Mavic Pro – so you can get yourself a new pair of props and benefit from some of the improvements of the Platinum Pro.
The final touch of the Platinum Pro – is how it looks – the reason why it’s been named the Platinum, is because, (no it’s not made of platinum), it’s been given a platinum paint job. Have a look at new look of the Mavic Platinum Pro vs the Mavic.

And what about the price?
There’s been a small increase in the price of a $100 – given that you’re already spending a thousand bucks on a drone, the minor increase of a hundred bucks is not really a deal-breaker. If you’re looking for the noise reduction and the increased flight-time, you’re not going to shy away from this drone for a measly hundred dollars.
Besides these small changes, the DJI Mavic Pro Platinum has the same portable and foldable build, the same powerful and easy-to-use camera drone as the DJI Mavic Pro, the same 4K stabilized camera, the same 4.3 mile (7km) range, features such as the innovative FlightAutonomy technology to sense obstacles up to 49ft (15m) away and a range of intelligent flight modes – which you can see here.
The new Mavic Pro Platinum is available to pre-order now and will ship in September, whilst the Mavic is already available. So that’s also a small difference between the DJI Mavic Platinum Pro vs DJI Mavic 🙂
