PARROT HYDROFOIL Waterproof Drone
What is it?
Parrot has once again demonstrated its ambition in the drone market with the Hydrofoil models. There are two variants, the NewZ, and the Orak, and they perfectly combine top performances and aggressive design. Hydrofoil can actually be used as a regular unit, or with an extra support locked to the hull when it becomes water-ready.
How does it work?
This drone will make it easy for you to enjoy it. When you unpack it, all you have to do is secure the foils to its bottom, download the FreeFlight 3 app, and you will be ready to work or enjoy.
As you can probably see on the pictures, the build is very light and aerodynamic, but it is also sturdy, with minor issues. Sometimes, the foils can get a little loose when hitting a more solid surface. This is something you should be aware of when operating it.
When we come to the battery life, which is always the main issue with drones, this one doesn’t stand out. Firstly, when charging, if you are plugged into the mains, the battery will be fully charged in half an hour. However, when charging by a USB port, it will take you three times longer. Once charged, the Hydrofoil lasts shorter than expected. On the water, you can drive it around for up to five minutes, and in the air it’s more or less the same.
You should also keep in mind that the surface of the water needs to be very still, because the manufacturer didn’t provide the information about what happens when the water gets to the internals of the drone. Nothing good, probably.
In the air, on the water
Once in the air, or on the water, you will soon forget about the minor issues of this model. Although its specifications say that the top speed is 10km/h on the water, the actual drive feels much faster. Considering its light weight, it handles really well in the role of a hovercraft.
Keep in mind that this is a small drone so flying it can be pretty fun. You can do a lot of maneuvers once in the air, but be advised, the onscreen joystick can lag a bit, and you should probably stick to open spaces. The menu for in-air tricks is easily accessed, but, for instance, the full 360-degree turn option can fully drain your battery.
Bottom line
If you don’t plan to fly it in extreme conditions, the Hydrofoil is certainly a fun little drone, but if you are anywhere near a serious drone flyer, it has some serious setbacks which will probably keep you away from buying it.
JJRC H31 Waterproof drone
What is it?
JJRC is known for making some of the best drones in the toy and hobby market, and the H31 model looks to fit just nicely in that tradition. Right from the start, you should know that although this drone is advertised as “waterproof”, you should be careful about landing it on water. It actually belongs in the category of water-resistant drones.
How does it work?
On the first look, you will notice that the designers did their best job of making something unique. This one really stands out from the crowd. Assembly is straight-forward and you will be ready for flying in 3 minutes. Although the design looks fragile and slim, the actual drone is very tough and durable. It will endure some serious beating, not that we encourage it. The controller is very similar to the previous JJRC products with basic functions that work well.
In the air
This thing is seriously light so don’t take it out in windy conditions. On the other hand, as we mentioned, it’s “waterproof” option really only means you can fly it in the rain and snow. It is very nimble and fun for flying, and the time in the air is somewhere between 6 and 8 minutes with a range of about 100 meters.
Bottom line
At the end of the day, the H31 is just a perfect little drone for beginners. It has all the features it needs and is your door to the flying world. Just don’t land it on any water or your flying dreams will soon sink.
Swellpro Splash Drone 3
